 Marathon Fishing Report

Sailfish Season is HERE!

The offshore fishing in the Marathon and middle Keys area has been highlighted lately by some fantastic Sailfish action. The season is here when Sailfish migrate into the area in greater numbers and will last from now through April. This past week has seen great action on days when there is an easterly current. Yesterday we had an east current and most boats had between 3-9 Sails on a trip and maybe more. We had 11 hooked up on the "Sundance" landed 6 and saw about 15 more that were working the surface for flying fish. Frigate birds were giving away locations of Sails all day and we were rewarded by following birds a few times. Once was a triple header to go with a double as well. Today the current turned to the west and there was a spotty bite on the Sailfish with a few boats scoring 1 or 2 fish. We were wreck fishing mostly, but did miss one Sail today as we worked a few surface baits around the wrecks we were fishing. We did land some nice Mutton Snappers however, one about 20lb. out of 150ft. on a couple wrecks. We also have been catching some nice King Mackerel, large Jack Crevalle and Amberjacks off of the same wrecks. Hopefully, the hot Sailfish bite is here to stay for the winter season. Look for hot action for the next few weeks anyway, especially when we have easterly current. Look for hot bites around the backsides of cool fronts after the wind comes back around to the NE and E after the North wind blows a bit. Some large Dolphin (Mahi-Mahi) have been showing up from time to time in the live bait spread while Sailfishing along with a nice Wahoo or two. Haven't heard much on Blackfin Tuna lately but look for more to show up after the new year. For more info on fishing in Marathon and the middle Florida Keys, check out our web site.

Good luck in all of your fishing adventures!
